Welcome to Sore Village School
Gununo Town, Sore Village Ethiopia
For over a decade, we have turned dark, moldy rooms into bright classrooms – and children sitting on rocks into confident learners. From Sore to two neighboring villages, we are breaking the bonds of poverty through education. But we cannot do it alone. Join us to build desks, provide meals, and change futures.
Our Mission is to help every child reach their full potential, to help each child escape the bonds of poverty through education, to instill confidence and to move them into mainstream society.
Our vision for the children of rural Sore Village is to have ongoing access to food, education, Health awareness and Disease prevention. We will continue to address these factors, as they are fundamental to the welfare of our children's survival.
We believe every child deserves dignity, not darkness. We act with integrity, put students first, and partner with local communities. We never give up on a child's potential, and we measure success not by profit, but by futures changed.
“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”
Sore Village Schools (SVS) was founded in 2014 by a native Ethiopian citizen. On a trip to Sore – the village where his father was born – he was deeply moved by the warmth and fellowship of the people. But he was shocked by the condition of the schools. Children sat on rocks in dark, moldy rooms. No windows. No doors. And yet, they were eager to learn. He returned home determined to make a difference and started the non-profit Ethiopian Village Schools. Today, SVS is actively working in Sore and teaching students in two other neighboring villages.
Sore Village is a social project in Gununo, Southern Ethiopia. Since 10 years Sore Village provides education, nutritious meals and community activities to vulnerable children including orphans and children with disabilities from food insecure families in the rural area. The social project comprises a school with currently three classrooms, a library with study rooms, two houses for teachers and social workers, a playground, a basketball court, a stable for milk cows and several hectares of land that is used for agriculture. Sore Village’s vision for the next three years is to become self-sufficient by selling agricultural products, and giving full-time education, as well as daily meals to 300 vulnerable children. This fundraising call has the objective of funding a solar energy system. Since Sore Village and its surroundings have plenty of sun but no electricity, the proposed solar panels and battery systems would enable Sore Village to have light to for children to study after sunset, to have electricity for cooking meals for the children, to pump drinking water from a well, and to use donated computers to provide basic computer knowledge to students.
In rural Ethiopia, the lack of basic school facilities turns learning into a daily struggle. Children sit on rocks because there are no desks. Classrooms have no windows or doors, leaving them dark, moldy, and unhealthy. Extreme poverty means many families cannot afford uniforms or even simple school supplies. Yet despite all of this, attendance remains high – because the hunger for learning is real.
We build and renovate classrooms with light, air, and real floors. We provide learning materials – books, pens, and chalkboards – so no child shares one pencil among ten. We feed young minds with a simple meal so they can focus, not learn on an empty stomach. We train teachers to inspire, not just instruct. And most importantly, we move children into mainstream society with the confidence and skills they need to succeed.
Education is the only proven path out of extreme poverty. In Sore Village, most families live on less than $3 per day. Without school, children face a future of manual labor, early marriage, or migration to overcrowded cities. With education, they gain the skills, confidence, and opportunities to break the cycle of poverty – for themselves, their families, and their entire village.
Yes, but free enrollment does not mean free learning. Government schools in rural areas are severely under-resourced. Classrooms are overcrowded with a 59-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. There are no desks, no books, no libraries, and often no windows or doors. Families still must pay for uniforms, supplies, and sometimes even "informal fees." Sore Village Schools fills the gap that government cannot – providing safe, dignified, and complete learning environments.
Sore Village Schools has served three villages and is still growing. For over ten years – since 2014 – we have worked tirelessly to bring education to those who need it most. Today, hundreds of children are learning safely in our schools. And because of your support, zero children sit on rocks in any classroom we have built.
